Established in the 1970’s, paralegal employment is not even considered ancient even in the new millennium. The United States Labor Department is predicting a high- demand of legal assistants by the year 2010. No wonder why there are plenty of paralegal courses that can be obtained online in order to cater to those whose lifestyle are busy in both home and office.

Paralegal employment showed that private law firms hire 7 out of the 10 legal assistants. As for the others, they end up both corporate legal departments and various government agencies. In the Federal type of authority, the American Justice Department is the largest employer which is seconded by the Social Security Administration and the United States Treasury Division. There are also some who resort to run their own business or contract their services to certain attorneys as a freelancer.

At this point, there are a number who are trying to lessen their expenses but still increase their availability, which is the reason why paralegal employment is mushrooming in the industry. They may not be paid as much as the lawyers are but they can perform tasks formerly carried out by the latter. However, they are still prohibited to handle a case, argue in court or bill a fee. Despite the projection of the upsurge of paralegal employment, competition continues to find its pace. There may be numerous job openings in and around the metropolis but remember that they are looking for the highly- skilled individuals. They even require applicants not just to complete an Associate degree but in a Bachelor’s program with Certification. Notice the classifieds, corporations are seeking for those who can mange with minimal supervision but can still carry out the assignments proficiently. They even need those who have been trained for at least five years. The reason behind the stringent criterions is that the occupation is not a piece of cake.

Legal assistants taken by corporations and governments normally complete the standard forty hours a week. That means, from 8am to 5pm until Monday to Friday. Basically, it will be a typical office setting because clients will also be available at the aforementioned time. It is also all throughout the year however, there are circumstances where legal assistants are only retained during the busiest seasons then released afterwards. Those who are connected in a law firm sometimes stay for extended hours in their headquarters because they are under pressure to meet deadlines in furnishing a copy of the decision of the lower court that they may bring it up for appeal. There are also those who reward loyalty with bonus pays and additional breaks.
